The Signature Logo Face

The face that is my signature logo is created from the letters of my Hebrew name, Yehudi Rachel. It means ewe (female sheep) of the Jews of tribe of Judah. Judah itself means Praise, so it can also mean “ewe of praise.” When I first began to paint using the Hebrew letters as symbols, I went to sign my painting as in English as I always done since I was a girl. Then, I felt a tug in my soul as if my hand was held stayed. All of the strokes in the paintings are Hebrew letters. Was I now going to sign my name in my native tongue of English?

So the first UnGraven Image paintings were signed with my Hebrew name printed out the way I would have done in English. No face. I only use my first and second name (I prefer to be called “Judy Rey”) as homage to van Gogh who signed his paintings “Vincent”.

When a local art group put out a call for self portraits I decided to enter, intending to paint a semi realistic one in my UnGraven Image style. However, whe I found myself strapped for time due to personal committments, I began doodling around with turning the Hebrew letters of my name into a face. Although the doodle was turned into a painting too late to enter the show, I "won" in that I now had a signature.

When I showed the paintings or prints, I noticed that people who follow my work would stand before them seaching for the logo face, much as I have done searching for the NINA in Hershfeld's drawings, although my signature face is not hidden. I realized I had a logo as well as a signature, which is not unusual for a artist. Rembrandt, Rockwell, van Gogh and Monet all have signatures that we easily recognize --mine just happens to be the letters of my name made into a self portrait.

Match the letters by color to those in the logo on the left to see how the face is formed.

Recently I have created a Hebrew name portrait for the Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winning actress Diane Ladd. Everyone actually can have a Hebrew name. Many names are derived from Hebrew as Diane's is, while others can be easily turned into Hebrew as it is a phoenectic language, much the way we translate names in foreign languages into our own for print coverage.

Names have significance, not only in the Bible, but in many other cultures and religions as well. Our names represent us, and by turning my name into a self portrait, I am visually referencing that.

Below is a visual presentation of the Signature Logo with many of the signatures from my paintings from a page used in the print presentation..
